Lorna Jane Active Nation Day

A couple of years ago I was presented the opportunity to work with Lorna Jane Activewear. I didn't know much about them at the time. I looked at their online store and thought their clothes were cute so I agreed to work on a project in exchange for apparel.

Over time I really fell in love with the brand and what they stand for. Lorna Jane's 'Move Nourish Believe' campaign aligns perfectly with my own fitness values. I wrote a couple of sponsored posts for them over the years, but it was during that time I became a true customer and supporter of the brand. My Lorna Jane pieces are some of my favorites, so when I want to look great for a photoshoot or an event I almost always choose Lorna Jane. A quick glance at my Instagram account or even my personal training website, you will see Lorna Jane well represented. It's not because they paid me or gave me clothes for a campaign, but because I am an ongoing customer and enthusiastic fan of the brand. I even met Lorna Jane Clarkson at an event in Dallas earlier this year. This is not a sponsored post.

I was really excited to learn about Active Nation Day at Lorna Jane. Active Nation Day is September 27th and was created by Lorna Jane to inspire women to connect with their communities and live a more active life. I decided to drag hubby down to the Lorna Jane store in the West Village (Dallas) to make my Active Nation Day pledge.

What is that one thing you want to commit to (or recommit to?) Is it to move more? To train for a race? To get up early to workout? To inspire others? To love your body? There is power in partners. Great partners make life better: A spouse who is the Yin to your Yang, a co-worker who helps balance work with fun or a workout partner who keeps you motivated to move.

Workout Partners

A workout partner can provide accountability, motivation and even push you to work harder with a little friendly competition. Working out with a friend can feel more like a social hour than a (dreaded) workout hour. Maintaining healthy habits can be easier and more fun with a partner.

When the alarm on my phone blares from the other room at 5:30am for my morning workout I usually have the same thought. (explicative removed.) 

Most days all I want to do is sleep....just ten more minutes...then ten more...for the next hour. But more often than not, I drag myself out to bed to take care of business. You know why? One of the reasons is that I have an early morning workout partner. We work out in my ShredShed and if I cancel on my friend, then I know she will miss her workout that morning too. I don't want to let her down.

Sometimes we are all too willing to cancel on ourselves, but we don't want to disappoint our friends. I love the accountability of a morning workout partner. I love catching up with my friend while catching up on my fitness. We have fun together in the morning and get in a good sweat!

Pay Fit Forward!

I've been thinking about partners because I am partnering with My Fit Foods to promote their Pay Fit Forward campaign! Pay Fit Forward is a promotion that My Fit Foods is running every Friday in September. When you purchase a My Fit Foods meal, you get a second meal to "Pay Fit Forward" to a friend or My Fit Foods can donate your second meal to a local food charity. How great is that! Partners Circuit!

I hosted the fitness portion of an event at My Fit Foods on Lovers Lane this week! We had a fun group of bloggers, friends and foodies who came by the Lovers Lane My Fit Foods location. We worked up an appetite during my 30 minute partners-themed circuit workout before enjoying a delicious My Fit Foods meal to refuel!

Nutrition Coach Q&A

We were all hungry after the workout and ready to dig into these delicious healthy My Fit Foods meals! I had the Power Bowl with quinoa and sweet potatoes. It was so delicious and filling, I was blown away!

The Q&A was hosted by Kim of Kim's Cravings and we learned a little more about the healthy options that My Fit Foods offers. The Lovers Lane location even has a drive through! My Fit Foods offers fresh, nutritionally-balanced, portion-controlled, ready-to-eat Gluten-free meals and snacks. They take all the guess work out of meal planning and healthy eating and provide free meal planning services with a nutrition coach.

I stopped by the Lovers Lane location the other day to see what it was all about. When I walked in the small store there were a few people browsing the refrigerator section and a My Fit Foods nutritionist was working with a customer. I introduced myself to the manager and he gave me the run down on My Fit Foods. He explained how they have over 60 locally-prepared, nutritionally-balanced, portion-controlled, ready-to-eat Gluten-free meals and snacks that are never frozen. Dude, Where's the Ocean? How to Catch a Wave in Dallas

I've had a life long love affair with the ocean. Unfortunately, we have been forced into a long distance relationship due to geographical inconvenience. I lived in western Pennsylvania for the first twenty something years of my life and then I moved to north Texas. Any dreams I may have had of becoming a beach bum/surfer girl were crushed under the reality of my land locked lifestyle. Until now.

Dallas may not be Surf City but it turns out, I can still have a surfing experience in the city at City Surf Deep Ellum.

Mai Lyn from Deep Fried Fit and I hosted a meet and greet for our Dallas Fitness Ambassadors at City Surf Deep Ellum. We couldn't think of better way for fitness bloggers to connect than for us to get sweaty together...and we did get sweaty.

City Surf is a small studio in Deep Ellum that holds what I call 'city style' surfboards. No water needed! The surfboards are balanced on BOSU balls that are secured by two bungee cords on each side. More experienced surfers can remove one of the two bungees on each side for an even more unstable experience.

We spent the first few minutes with our instructor Melanie getting acquainted with our boards. We walked forward and backwards, rocked back and forth and did some warm up air squats. I love the concept of doing your whole workout on an unstable surface. I believe that stabilization, balance and core are the foundations of fitness, building skill and strength in these areas should be a priority.

It was definitely a little wobbly for me up there, but I was up for the challenge. Melanie relieved everyone's biggest fear in the beginning of the class. She said if you fall off the board, she takes it as a compliment. It just means you are pushing yourself to your limits. If you fall you are a badass. I appreciated the encouragement, because falling was a very real possibility. She said it happens all the time, even to experienced surfers. Even to her.

"If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you."

If you thought we were just playing around on a surfboard you were wrong. This workout was no joke. The class we attended was structured to give us a taste of a few of their different class styles.


The first portion was a sample of their 'City Surf' class. It is described as their signature class featuring fun surf-inspired movements utilizing surfer specific muscle groups. It was really fun to lie prone on the surf board using my arms to paddle out to the waves only to jump (or in my case carefully stand) up to catch the wave. Melanie reminded us that there are no scheduled breaks, because in surfing you always have to keep moving...or else you die. ha. (But she encouraged us to listen to our bodies and rest as needed.)

Then we moved into the 'Big Kahuna' class which is defined as a strength-inspired class featuring resistant bands and sand bells, great for toning and muscle development. This was definitely my favorite portion of the class. Melanie told us that this is a great class for City Surf beginners because it is less cardio-intense, the slower movements give you the opportunity to develop confidence on the board. We strung resistant bands through loops on the nose of the board that attached to our ankle leash and we worked through some lower body strength circuits. Then we looped those bands to the sides of the boards for an upper body workout. By the time the 'Big Kahuna' workout was ending, I was thinking it was probably time to start cooling down. Did I hear someone say Yoga? Nope.


We moved into the 'Beach Body Bootcamp' portion of the class which is a cardio-based class designed to make you sweat and burn calories. This is just like a traditional bootcamp but on a surfboard. Burpees? check. Sandbags? check. Kick your ass? check. This was killer. We did a ladder work out with three moves starting with six reps each working down to one rep. If you thought burpees were physically demanding on the ground, try them on a surfboard. This portion was really fun and really challenging. I was dripping sweat all over the sharks after that one.


"Buddha Board' Yoga is their spin on Yoga. The regular class is a 50 minute Vinaysa flow that will take your Yoga practice to the next level. All I could think at this point was "Yay, the cool down." Not so fast. Turns out Yoga on a surfboard was its own kind of challenge. After this part of the class, I have a whole new respect for those stand up paddle board Yogis. Of course it was during Savasana (corpse pose) that I almost fell off the board, almost just rolled right off. Ha

I'm Internet-Famous Today!

Hi, Friends. I am internet famous today! Toni from Running Loving Living reached out to me the other day about a collaboration (exciting things to come!) and offered to feature me on her awesome running blog!

What Toni doesn't know is that back when I was a newbie blogger (way-ol-ye-back in 2011) she was my unwitting blog mentor. You see, I was a brand new blogger in those olden days, and maybe it was my perception at the time, but it didn't seem there were as many running bloggers back then as there are today. I admired Toni for the space she carved out for herself on the web.

So I gravitated towards Toni and her blog for general direction on mine, in a totally non-copying, 'imitation in the sincerest form of flattery' kind of way. Ha.

Me in 2011:
"Toni is hosting a giveaway. Wait. That's a great idea, maybe I should host a giveaway on my blog."
"Oh look, Toni is putting on a virtual race. I could do that!"
"Toni joined something called Fitfluential. What is Fitfluential? Maybe I should join!"

So needless to say, she is probably single handedly responsible for my little blog getting off the ground and she didn't even know it! Thanks Toni!
