If you know me, you know just attending a blog conference is sort of a step outside my comfort zone in itself. Talking to strangers, being social, making new friends, it is not really my thing. I'm not a total weirdo, I usually feel awkward at first, but then once I remember that I have something huge in common with the other hundred people in the room, I kind of loosen up and maybe even (gasp!) make a friend. That is what blog conferences are all about, right? You go to socialize, network, and learn!
Then I did something really weird, for me.
I applied to speak at the lightening round sessions. You know, in front of people. A lot of people. If I get selected I will present my topic for five minutes using 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide. What is wrong with me? That is probably the most terrifying thing that I can think of doing! But I had this idea and I felt motivated to pitch it. It is really good opportunity! Maybe I had the courage to apply because I think the chances of actually getting selected are pretty slim.
Here is part of my pitch, without giving it all away.
What can you learn about social media from a social introvert?
Take the ME out of social media. It is not all about you.
Social Media may appear to be all about you. After all, it is your
face on that Facebook page, your words behind the blog, your lunch on
Instagram, and your wit on Twitter, but if you keep making social media
all about you, there won't be any social left in the media.
After my presentation you will turn from a social media introvert into a social media butterfly.
