5 Tips for Staying Fit this Holiday Season

'Tis the season to stuff your face, slack off, and generally throw all good healthy intentions out the window, because we are all just going to resolve to start over in January anyway. Right? Wrong!

There is absolutely no reason why we can't fully enjoy the holiday season with family and friends and still maintain our active healthy lifestyles. The secret is balance. Here are my five tips to stay fit this holiday

5 Tips for Staying Fit this Holiday Season

1. Plan Ahead:

With time off from work and holiday travel schedules, it can be challenging to stick to your regular workout routine. Plan ahead and try to stick to your routine as best as possible, but don't beat yourself up if you miss an extra day or two because you spent 12 hours in the car with the family. Remember that your health and fitness routine is a year-round endeavor, missing an occasional workout (or three) won't hurt as long as you get back on track when you can. If you won't have time for your normal gym routine, plan a calisthenics style workout on the road (like the one below), or pack your running shoes and explore a new neighborhood when you need a few minutes away from the in-laws ('cause that never happens).

2. Strike a Balance:

This is one of my favorite times of the year and two of the reasons I love it so much is the delicious food and all of the delicious food! (OK, the time spent with loved ones is pretty good too.) I, for one, take full advantage of the holiday fare and especially savor the treats that were made for me with love. While I fully endorse holiday treats, it can be hard not to go overboard! Don't deprive yourself of the things you enjoy. Strike a balance by eating your regular healthy meals before and after a party or celebration. If you make good choices most of the time, then a little indulgence at a party won't make much of a difference.

3. Bring a Healthy Dish:

When I go to a party or participate in a holiday pot luck at work, I always try to bring my own healthy dish. That way, I know there will be at least one thing on the table that is healthy, and the other party goers probably appreciate it too. 4. Holiday Races or Challenges:

Sign up to run a Turkey trot, a Christmas Day fun run or a New Year's Eve (or Day) 5k. Having a race on your calendar can help keep you motivated to workout as you prepare for the big day. Holiday races make great family traditions, especially for those parents who are trying to teach children the importance of a active, healthy, and fun lifestyle.

Sign up for an online challenge. Runner's Word is hosting their annual Holiday Run Streak where you commit to running at least one mile a day from Christmas to New Year's. It is a great motivation to lace up those shoes, even if it is just for one mile. No matter how busy I get over the holidays, I can usually find 10-15 minutes to run (or walk) a mile.

5. Treat yourself: 

Nothing motivates me like new fitness gear! Add some workout gear to your holiday wish lists or, better yet, treat yourself to the things you really want. There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself for a great year committed to health and fitness! What is on your #holidayfitlist?

    Definitely new workout gear! Love so many of the Lorna Jane pieces....but don't have any of my own just yet!
