Monday Must Haves: FOOD

Introducing a new weekly theme for the Running for Dummies blog:  Monday Must-Haves.  Each Monday I will create a list of  my own health or fitness related Must Haves.  This week Monday Must Haves are the must have foods in my kitchen.  These are things that I will drive to the store at midnight send hubby to the store at midnight if I run out.   These are the things that I can't go without for one day.

1.  Almond Milk.
I love almond milk.  It is all natural, it has 30 calories, 0 grams of sugar and 50% more calcium than dairy milk.  I do eat dairy, and I drink milk, but I love almond milk.  It makes a great base for protein shakes. What is not to love?

2. Peanut Butter.
I eat peanut butter at least three times a day.  I often cite it as my favorite food.  I use PB2 in my protein shakes because it has all the flavor of full fat peanut butter without all the fat and calories, but I still do regularly consume the full fat natural peanut butter.  I eat it by the spoonful or have it with a side of green apples.

3. Protein Powder.
I drink protein shakes twice a day.  Once in the morning as part of my breakfast #1, and again immediately following my Insanity workouts.  I like the Jay Robb powder because it is so delicious and made with all natural ingredients.
4. Greek Yogurt.
I love Greek Yogurt so much that I wrote a love poem to it.  Regular yogurt can be so bad for you (read the ingredients)!  Greek yogurt is all natural and can also be used as healthy substitutions for mayonnaise & sour cream.  I am seriously in love.

5. La Croix.
I haven't had a Diet Coke one time in 2012.  I kicked that addiction bad habit and replaced it with a much healthier option.  La Croix is all natural, has no artificial sweeteners, no calories and no chemicals.  I still can pop the top for that fizzy refreshing drink without all the additives.  I said goodbye to Diet Coke and never looked back.

6.  Apple Cider Vinegar.
I drink two tablespoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar diluted in water three times a day before a meal. I got this idea when I read Tosca Reno's blog on the subject.  Besides nice abs, there are many documented health benefits of drinking raw organic apple cider vinegar.

There you have it, the first installment of Monday Must Haves! What are your food must haves?

  1. oh my goodness! im laughing because every single one of your must have's is a staple in my daily diet! i guess great minds think alike!! :o) spa love!

  2. Love the Must Haves! Never tried Apple Cider Vinegar..better check it out!

  3. Interested in the Apple Cider Vinegar... I'll try to find some next grocery store visit. Does it have to be organic? The link you have to the blog you referenced does not work :\ CAn you fix please? :)

    1. yes, I have read it has to be the organic. I like Braggs. Thanks for letting me know about the dead link. I fixed it now. Lea :)

    2. Thanks! Headed out to the store now! I will check... my grocery store has one of the craptastic organic sections, though. Sometimes they surprise me with cool stuff though!

  4. Interested why you don't drink real milk? It seems like everyone has kicked milk to the curb recently, but I can't put my finger on why? Doesn't it have more protine and vitamins than almond milk? Are you lactose intolerant?

    1. I DO drink milk. I am not lactose intolerant. I eat dairy. I prefer almond milk for my protein shakes. :)

  5. I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now (since one of my cousins posted on Facebook about your plank-a-day) and I love it!

But my question is, how do you manage the apple cider vinegar? I tried it tonight for the first time (2T in a cup of water) and it took me half an hour of bargaining with myself to take another sip to drink it all down. Am I just a baby about this? Do you get used to it?

    1. oops. Did I forget to mention it was gross?!? LOL! My husband calls it my "nasty juice". Ha Ha. Honestly, you do get used to it. I probably only had a little trouble getting it down the first week. A lot of people add honey to it to help with the taste!

    2. LOL there's gross and then there was this. I did a lot of 'hold your nose and take a drink' and gave myself little pep talks. At one point I considered drinking it like a shot - at least it'd be quick!

  6. I'm not sure exactly why but this blog is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I'll check back
later on and see if the problem still exists.
