March Mad (Fit)ness: My Final Four

You almost can't mention March without someone bringing up March Madness. While my coworkers are filling out their brackets, I am thinking about my own final four. I am in a position (again, sigh) that I need to lose a little weight. The long winter got the best of me. I am approaching it from a new perspective.


March Mad (Fit)ness: My Final Four


What are the things that are important when trying to lose weight and get healthier? People often focus only on the aesthetics. Of course we want to work out to look good, but when physical appearance is the only goal, we can easily get frustrated if the progress doesn't seem to match our hard work quickly enough.

There are plenty of reasons to exercise but I work out, eat healthy, and try to live a healthy lifestyle for my own final four reasons.

1. Health
No matter what results I am seeing (or not seeing) on the outside, the bottom line is that exercising is good for my insides. Even if I never lose a pound, a few miles on the treadmill or lifting weights is improving my health every time I do it, regardless of the scale. I am building a healthier heart and a stronger body. This is the only body I get, so I'll try to take care of it.

2. Happiness
I wrote an extended post on how exercise makes me happy. When I work out regularly, I am happier, I manage stress and anxiety better and am more emotionally even. The endorphins are reason enough to work out.

3. Fuel
When I eat whole natural foods most of the time, I am fueling my body with the proper nutrients for my workouts and for my life. I have better skin, shinier hair, more energy, and the fuel I need to work and play hard. Under-nourishing or over-eating on a regular basis only inhibits the achievement of my goals.

4. Performance in Life
When I work out regularly, I usually see progress. I train to run faster, lift heavier weights, or practice Yoga with more precision (i.e. not fall over). The most important thing to keep in mind is that I am training for life. I can carry the groceries, climb the stairs, chase Ollie around the back yard and jump out of the way of a moving bus (if I needed to). Training for a sport or a marathon is great, but training for a healthy life is a necessity.

I'll focus on these final four as the main reasons to exercise and eat healthy and will consider any weight loss as a bonus and a nice side effect of a continued healthy lifestyle.

  1. Love the graphic!! Did you use Canva or PicMonkey? I am completely obsessed with graphics now. I spend more time on my damn graphics than the post itself!! I even paid the $33/yearly fee for the PicMonkey Royale!! Don't tell my husband :/

    These are 4 great reasons! I follow pretty much similar philosophies. When I eat healthy (Paleo), exercise daily and overall live an active lifestyle I am happier, have more energy, and have a more positive outlook on LIFE.

  3. Canva??? Hmmmmm!! LOL! I too am in a position to need to lose weight....AGAIN! Actually, I needed to lose weight already and then after some big life changes, I did a bit too much stress eating and now have an ADDITIONAL 20 pounds to lose! www.pamrunsmarathons.blogspot.com I really enjoy your blog!
